Above: Terrible.
I love 911's, I hate Targa's. There seems to be a lot of Targa love around here and I could never get on board.
Below: Better.
When I look for a nice 911 to buy (usually an SC or early Carrera) and I see it's a Targa I immediately cross it off, they're just so ugly and ungainly. Even the added perk of having a removable top does nothing for me. If I wanted the sun to come through I'd get a Cabrio. That giant piece of wraparound glass? Awful. Give me a coupe any day.
Even the clever sliding glass roof of the 993 variant didn't do a whole lot for me and it's the closest one there is to a coupe.
Terrible:
Better:
Granted, I really like the mechanism on the new Targa, I think the way it operates is cool, but it's still butt ugly. LOOK AT THAT DUMB, HUGE, SILVER B-PILLAR. I saw one of the new ones in person yesterday for the first time and it looks like a cabrio wearing a headband. I actually got excited when I saw it too, I was hoping it would change my mind, NOPE.
New one, neat, also terrible:
New coupe, BETTER:
Targa's: The worst 911's.

I like the 991 Targas and that's it.

It's true the coupe looks better than the Targa, but the Targa is infinitely better than the cabriolet.
Ugh, I hate the hunch-back look of the Cabrios with the top down.

A friend of mine has a Targa, and it's his baby. He will never let go of it. Evident by how much he drives it (is it wrong that I can't remember what color it is, but I can tell you the cover is blue?).
I think he'd be upset over this. He's pretty hardcore Porsche, though he wants a CJ7 for his next toy..

I always thought the first ones were awkward. An answer to a regulation that never happened. They stuck with it for a while, then got rid of them.
It was a short-lived variant and a trivia question rolled up in one.
Then they reintroduced it.
Then they reintroduced it again.
It's not that I don't like it, I just don't think it's necessary. Like the Crosstour, the CrossCabriolet, and other weird answers to questions that no one asks.
I just don't get it.

Agreed about the hunch back. I'd rather any of the 964 or 991 Speedster if I had the means.

I can see the new one being the only attractive one to some, I do not think they will age well at all.

Although now that I look at the 993 that's just like a big sunroof.

My uncle had a green one. He also loved it but it was also the cheapest one he could find since nobody wanted them in the early 90's. For good reason, the thing constantly leaked everywhere.

It really is. But the triangular rear quarter window was a dead giveaway from the side. Another odd styling cue that didn't need to happen.

Agreed the 911 Targa is a repulsive vile creature. Nothing like the coupe.

I don't like Targas at all. I wish Porsche would have at least built them as proper convertibles. The 993 and 997 Targas are quite okay as they are basically coupes.

At least the Targa HAS lines compared to Cabrios, which I think are the worst 911s. The Targa came about as a way to comply with the US regulations at the time, which called for some kind of roll bar for topless driving in case of a rollover accident.
Now I agree that the coupe looks better than the Targa in some aspects, but the Targa compared to the Cabriolet? There's only one good answer.
This looks good:
These don't:

My dad loves the Targa. He said that he thinks Porsche re-released it because the kids that originally fell in love with the Targa are now old enough to get one for themselves. And because I share most of my car tastes with my dad, I also loved the Targa when it first came out.
Like is it pretty? Some may say yes and some may say no. But it sure as heck is nostalgic to the right person.

Well that's funny. The new Targa is the first 911 that made me want a 911.

It looks either like a fucking mistake or an afterthought they came up with at the last second.

I don't love them, but hate is too strong of a word. Targa 911 is better than no 911 at all.

I do not like cabrio's, I only mentioned it as a viable option for a person who would want sunshine on their shoulders. I do think they have their place as most sports cars have a convertible variant and since Porsche has been making proper convertibles of their cars since the 356.
The lines that the Targa has are terrible lines.

I could see that being a thing. If Audi were to make a 2-door A3 with boxed fender flares (like the RS5 perhaps) I would lust for it like the UrQuattro I had a crush on years ago (and like I do for the RS5 now).
Thing is, the Targa is dumb. I think it was a smart move to bring it back looking like the ones from the 70's and 80's for the nostalgia factor, but it doesn't change how ugly it is.

Targas, not targa's.
Also, why does not liking something have to turn into hating something because you don't like it? Does its mere existence offend you? Did a Targa plunder your village and burn down your house? No? Good, just be indifferent and let the Targa exist for those who do like it.

I've never cared for them, even though I know from experience that the driving experience is basically the same. I'm going to have to force myself to like them, because they're now my only chance for owning an aircooled 911 in the future. All the others have gone supernova.

targas aren't bad, but coupe's look better. Just like with any convertible.

I never liked them because of all the reasons you named: ungainly, misproportioned, etc. I wanted to give them a chance with the new retro design but I just can't. Pretty sure I'm gonna hate Targas forever.

If I were to order a 911 from scratch, the Targa would be the one I'd have. Open roof, few of the drawbacks of the convertible. 4S please.
